Coding and coder are broad terms used in the tech world that encompasses a range of disciplines that I&#8217;ll expand upon later.<\/p>\n<p>Coders use coding and programming languages to perform a specific function.<\/p>\n<p>Coders use a multitude of coding languages, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/skillcrush.com\/blog\/html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HTML<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/skillcrush.com\/blog\/c-c-c-and-objective-c-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C#<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/skillcrush.com\/blog\/css\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSS<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That all said, if you&#8217;ve used CSS to change the color or font on your WordPress site or used HTML to format a blog, you are a coder. However, as you can imagine, computer programming is a bit more nuanced.<\/p>\n<p>Computer programmers write and test instructions for a computer, software program or application to perform. Operating systems (e.g. iOS, Microsoft Windows, and Android) are an example of a computer program written by programmers.<\/p>\n<p>Programmers typically have a broad coding background, with knowledge of and experience using various programming languages, including but not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HTML<\/li>\n<li>C++<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/skillcrush.com\/blog\/learn-javascript\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Java<\/a><\/li>\n<li>XML<\/li>\n<li>SQL<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/skillcrush.com\/blog\/what-is-python\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Python<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/skillcrush.com\/blog\/php\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PHP<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Swift<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So computer programmers tell computers what to do. Now for the million dollar question: what\u2019s the difference between a coder and programmer? You\u2019re not the only one who\u2019s pondered this very question.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Simply put, programmers conceptualize and develop a framework of decisions for an application. The term \u201ccoder\u201d refers to someone who codes\u2026 that\u2019s all. A web developer codes and, therefore, is a coder&#8230; the same can be said for web designers, software engineers, software developers, and the list goes on.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not impossible to find &#8220;Professional Coder&#8221; jobs on your favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/skillcrush.com\/blog\/sites-finding-remote-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">job search engine<\/a>; however, you\u2019re more likely to run into \u201cmedical coder\u201d positions, which is not the same as a tech coder.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t despair, though. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/computer-and-information-technology\/home.htm#:~:text=The%20median%20annual%20wage%20for,Not%20Covered%20in%20Detail%20page.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a> projects that computer and information technology occupations (including coders!) are projected to grow 15% between 2021 and 2031.<\/p>\n<p>With that being said, here are a few coding jobs.<\/p>\n<h3>Front end developer<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/skillcrush.com\/category\/front-end-developer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">front end developer<\/a> is a tech professional that builds the user-facing, visual aspects of a website. Anything you can see on a website is probably built by a front end developer \u2014 web pages, menus, forms, buttons, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Front end developers primarily use three coding languages to perform their job:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HTML<\/li>\n<li>CSS<\/li>\n<li>JavaScript<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Back end developer<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/skillcrush.com\/blog\/what-is-a-back-end-developer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Back end developers<\/a> are web developers that work on the \u201cunseen\u201d portion of a website. These web developers are responsible for building and maintaining the functionality of a website.
